Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures
  • Congenital Lung Abnormalities

Background:

  • Extralobar pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital lung malformation.
  • Surgical resection is the standard treatment for symptomatic cases.
  • Minimally invasive techniques are increasingly explored for thoracic procedures.

Observation:

  • A 45-year-old woman presented with an abnormal chest shadow.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed as extralobar pulmonary sequestration.
  • The procedure utilized a single small incision for instrument insertion.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of extralobar pulmonary sequestration was successfully performed using single-incision thoracoscopic surgery (SITS).
  • The technique involved a rigid video-thoracoscope and articulating endograspers for tumor manipulation.

  • Clipping and ligation of the anomalous feeding vessel were crucial steps for successful resection.
  • Implications:

    • Single-incision thoracoscopic surgery (SITS) is a recommended and suitable surgical option for extralobar pulmonary sequestration.
    • This approach may offer advantages in terms of reduced postoperative pain and improved cosmesis.
    • Further studies could explore the long-term outcomes and broader applicability of SITS for this condition.
