Background:

Community integration emphasizes social behavior assessment.
Existing measures of social behavior in schizophrenia are limited.
The Social Behaviour Schedule (SBS) was re-assessed for improved measurement.

Purpose of the Study:

To re-assess the Social Behaviour Schedule (SBS) for reliability and validity.
To determine if the SBS can effectively measure social functioning in community out-patients with schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

Investigated internal consistency, construct validity, and test-retest reliability in 421 schizophrenia out-patients.
Assessed concurrent validity against the Life Skill Profile (LSP) in 143 additional patients.

Main Results:

A 17-item SBS (SBS-17) demonstrated construct validity across four factors: Antisocial Behaviour, Depressed Behaviour, Social Withdrawal, and Thought Disturbance.
SBS-17 exhibited good test-retest reliability and significant social behavior ratings in a community sample.
SBS-17 factors correlated weakly with positive and negative symptoms but strongly with the LSP, except for Depressed Behaviour.

Conclusions:

The SBS-17 is a valid, concise measure of key community social functioning factors.
The SBS-17 is suitable for both research and clinical applications in schizophrenia.
This validated tool supports the assessment of social behavior crucial for community integration.
