Abstract:
We report a case of grade III pseudomyxoma peritonei revealed by mucusuria and abdominal mass. These symptoms are unusual; the most frequent clinical presentation is acute appendicitis or progressively increasing abdominal diameter.
Insights
This case report highlights unusual symptoms of pseudomyxoma peritonei, including mucusuria and abdominal mass. These signs differ from typical presentations like appendicitis or increasing abdominal size.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Oncology
Background:
- Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare malignancy characterized by mucinous ascites.
- It typically arises from a ruptured appendiceal mucinous neoplasm.
Observation:
- This report details a case of grade III PMP presenting with uncommon symptoms: mucusuria (mucus in urine) and a palpable abdominal mass.
- These clinical manifestations are atypical for PMP.
Findings:
- The patient's presentation with mucusuria and abdominal mass led to the diagnosis of grade III pseudomyxoma peritonei.
- This contrasts with the more common initial presentations of PMP, such as acute appendicitis or progressive abdominal distension.
Implications:
- Recognizing unusual symptoms like mucusuria is crucial for early PMP diagnosis.
- This case underscores the importance of considering PMP in patients with atypical abdominal complaints.
