Summary

Rejection sensitivity (RS) is linked to differences in brain structure. Lower gray matter volume in the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus and higher volume in the inferior temporal gyrus correlate with higher RS.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Brain Imaging

Background:

  • Rejection sensitivity (RS) describes a tendency to anxiously anticipate, perceive, and react intensely to rejection.
  • High RS is associated with increased risk for mental disorders.
  • Previous research explored brain activity during social rejection but not brain structure in relation to RS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between individual differences in Rejection Sensitivity (RS) and brain structure.
  • To identify specific brain regions whose gray matter volume (GMV) correlates with RS scores.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized voxel-based morphometry (VBM) on MRI scans from 338 healthy adults (150 men, 188 women).
  • Participants completed the Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire.
  • Analyzed correlations between regional GMV and RS scores using multiple regression, controlling for age, sex, and total brain GMV.

Main Results:

  • Found a negative association between RS scores and GMV in the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus.
  • Observed a positive correlation between RS scores and GMV in the inferior temporal gyrus.
  • These brain regions are implicated in social cognition processes.

Conclusions:

  • Individual differences in RS are associated with structural variations in specific brain regions.
  • Findings suggest a neuroanatomical basis for rejection sensitivity.
  • Highlights the role of social cognition-related brain areas in understanding RS.
