A hydatid cyst in the cecum caused chronic intestinal obstruction in a 70-year-old male. This rare intraluminal lesion mimicked malignancy on imaging, highlighting the need for considering hydatid disease in endemic areas.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Parasitology
- Radiology
Background:
- Intestinal obstruction is a common surgical emergency.
- Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically affects the liver and lungs.
- Intraluminal intestinal hydatid cysts are rare but can cause significant pathology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of intraluminal cecal hydatid cyst presenting as chronic intestinal obstruction.
- To highlight the radiological mimicry of malignancy by intraluminal hydatid cysts.
- To emphasize the importance of considering hydatid disease in the differential diagnosis of intestinal obstruction in endemic regions.
Main Methods:
- A case report of a 70-year-old male with abdominal pain.
- Clinical diagnosis of chronic intestinal obstruction based on barium meal follow-through.
- Surgical intervention with right hemicolectomy and histopathological examination of the resected specimen.
Main Results:
- A 70-year-old male presented with symptoms of chronic intestinal obstruction.
- Radiological investigations suggested a lesion in the ileo-cecal junction, mimicking malignancy.
- Histopathology confirmed the lesion to be an intraluminal hydatid cyst within the cecum.
Conclusions:
- Intraluminal hydatid cysts in the cecum are an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction.
- These cysts can present insidiously and mimic malignant neoplasms on imaging.
- Hydatid disease should be included in the differential diagnosis for intestinal obstruction, particularly in regions where the disease is endemic.
