Background:

  • Waist circumference (WC) is a key metric for assessing metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
  • WC composition (visceral fat area [VFA], subcutaneous fat area [SFA], muscle, etc.) can vary by sex and generation, impacting risk assessment accuracy.
  • Previous epidemiological studies have not comprehensively analyzed these generational differences in WC components.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how WC and its components, particularly VFA, differ across generational age groups.
  • To determine if a single WC threshold is appropriate for all generations in health risk assessment.
  • To explore the relationship between WC, VFA, and BMI across different age cohorts.

Main Methods:

  • A health examination dataset of 11,570 Japanese employees and spouses (2004-2009) was analyzed.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans were used to measure VFA, SFA, WC, muscle, and bone.
