  • To investigate the longitudinal influence of approximate number sense (ANS) and Arabic numeral knowledge on arithmetic skill development in children.
  • To determine which of these foundational skills is a stronger predictor of later arithmetic abilities.

  • An 11-month longitudinal study was conducted with 6-year-old children.
  • Measures included symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude judgments to assess ANS.
  • Knowledge of Arabic numerals and arithmetic skills were also assessed.

  • A unitary factor for ANS efficiency was identified, correlating with arithmetic skills.
  • Knowledge of Arabic numerals at age 6 strongly predicted arithmetic skill growth over 11 months.

  • While ANS is related to arithmetic, knowledge of Arabic numerals is a more critical predictor of arithmetic development.
  • Verbal processes involved in learning numeral labels and translating between numeral and verbal codes are key constraints on arithmetic learning.
