Background:

  • Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) plays a critical role in ocular neovascularization and disease pathogenesis.
  • Accurate quantification of intravitreal VEGF is essential for understanding its physiological and pathological roles in the eye.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if a specific pre-analytical stabilization method is required for accurate detection of intrinsic VEGF levels in naïve vitreous samples.
  • To assess the impact of a stabilization regimen on measured intravitreal VEGF concentrations.

Main Methods:

  • Naïve vitreous samples were collected from 14 patients undergoing vitrectomy for various vitreomacular pathologies.
  • Samples were divided: one half was immediately frozen (unstabilized), the other half was stabilized with albumin and arginine before freezing (stabilized).
