Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between fractalkine gene receptor polymorphisms and chronic tonsillitis.
  • To determine if specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are more prevalent in patients with chronic tonsillitis compared to healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with 79 patients diagnosed with chronic tonsillitis and 76 controls.
  • Genotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis.
  • Two specific SNPs in the fractalkine receptor gene: c.745G>A (V249I) and c.839C>T (T280M) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference was observed in the frequencies of the c.745G>A (V249I) SNP or its alleles between patients and controls (p = 0.363 and p = 0.743).
  • The c.839C>T (T280M) SNP was found to be significantly more frequent in the control group compared to the chronic tonsillitis patient group (p < 0.001).
  • Similarly, the T allele frequency for the c.839C>T polymorphism was significantly higher in controls (p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The fractalkine gene receptor c.839C>T (T280M) single nucleotide polymorphism may be associated with a reduced risk of developing chronic tonsillitis.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise role of fractalkine receptor genetics in tonsillitis pathogenesis.
