Background:

  • The GoGirlGo! (GGG) program aims to boost physical activity (PA) in girls through a free, widely available curriculum.
  • Formal evaluation of the GGG program's effectiveness has been lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To pilot test the GoGirlGo! curriculum's effectiveness in enhancing PA, self-efficacy for PA, and enjoyment of PA among elementary-aged girls (5-13 years).

Main Methods:

  • A 12-week pilot study with a within-subjects repeated measures design involving nine afterschool programs.
  • Physical activity (PA) was measured using accelerometry at baseline, mid-program, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up.
  • Self-efficacy and enjoyment of PA were assessed using validated scales at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in overall PA was observed, with girls accumulating an average of 11 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA on GGG days versus 8 minutes on non-GGG days.
  • Significant improvements in self-efficacy for PA from baseline to post-intervention were maintained at follow-up.
  • Enjoyment of PA showed improvement from baseline to follow-up, with 89% of curriculum activities completed. Younger girls (5-7 years) experienced attention and comprehension challenges.

Conclusions:

  • While the GoGirlGo! curriculum significantly improved self-efficacy and enjoyment of PA, the observed increases in overall PA were minimal.
  • Curriculum enhancements are recommended, including daily sessions, modification of activities for moderate-to-vigorous intensity, and improved staff training for PA implementation and behavior management.
  • With modifications, GoGirlGo! could serve as a valuable, no-cost resource for afterschool programs to help girls meet PA recommendations.
