Safflower domestication genetics are complex, with many quantitative trait loci (QTL) identified. Comparative analysis with sunflower reveals parallel evolution and shared genetic underpinnings for domestication traits.
Area of Science:
- Plant genetics
- Crop domestication
- Comparative genomics
Background:
- Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a valuable oilseed crop.
- Domestication of safflower and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) within the Asteraceae family was analyzed.
- Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for domestication traits were investigated.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the genetic architecture of safflower domestication.
- To compare safflower domestication genetics with that of sunflower.
- To identify instances of quantitative trait loci (QTL) colocalization between safflower and sunflower.
Main Methods:
- Mapping of 61 quantitative trait loci (QTL) in safflower progeny.
- Analysis of 24 domestication-related traits.
- Comparative mapping of safflower QTL against previously identified sunflower QTL.
Main Results:
- 61 QTL were mapped, mostly with minor to moderate effects; two major QTL for flower color and leaf spininess.
- 14 safflower QTL colocalized with sunflower QTL for the same traits.
- Three traits (days to flower, achene length, selfed seed number) showed cultivar alleles with similar effects in both species.
Conclusions:
- Safflower domestication genetics are complex, similar to sunflower.
- Significant QTL colocalization between safflower and sunflower suggests parallel evolution.
- Shared underlying genes may have driven parallel trait transitions during domestication in both species.
