Background:

The chorionic bump is a rare gestational sac abnormality linked to poor pregnancy outcomes.
Neural tube defects, such as acrania, are associated with spontaneous abortions and folate deficiency.

Observation:

A 36-year-old woman with a history of miscarriage presented with a chorionic bump at 6 weeks gestation.
Ultrasound revealed a chorionic bump without fetal motion; acrania was diagnosed later.
The patient had not taken folic acid and had a history of spontaneous miscarriage.

Findings:

The chorionic bump persisted in size and appearance on follow-up scans.
Coexistence of a chorionic bump and acrania was observed, a combination not previously reported.
Low folic acid levels are a known risk factor for neural tube defects and spontaneous abortions.

Implications:

This case suggests a potential pathological link between chorionic bumps and neural tube defects, possibly due to folate deficiency.
Early pregnancy folate supplementation may be crucial for preventing such adverse outcomes.
Further research is needed to elucidate the association between placental pathology and fetal developmental abnormalities.
