Background:

  • National policies encourage increased physical activity in after-school programs (ASPs).
  • Established benchmarks exist for light-to-vigorous physical activity (LVPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in ASPs.
  • Limited data are available on children's adherence to these physical activity standards.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of children meeting established LVPA and MVPA policies in after-school programs.
  • To analyze factors influencing children's adherence to physical activity standards in ASPs.

Main Methods:

  • 812 children (6-12 years) in 19 ASPs wore accelerometers for 4 days.
  • LVPA and MVPA data were assessed against existing ASP policies and standards.
  • Mixed-model logistic regression analyzed differences by gender, age, BMI, race/ethnicity, and ASP type.

Main Results:

  • Meeting LVPA standards ranged from 75.4% to 97.8% across different benchmarks.
  • Meeting MVPA standards ranged from 0.3% to 26.9% across different benchmarks.
  • Boys, younger children, nonwhites, and those in faith- or community-based ASPs were more likely to meet standards.

Conclusions:

  • Current after-school program practices are adequate for meeting LVPA policies.
  • Existing practices are insufficient for meeting MVPA policies.
  • Further research is needed to identify optimal MVPA policies and effective strategies for implementation.
