Soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2) are valuable biomarkers for detecting kidney damage and dysfunction in older adults, even without diabetes.

- To investigate the association between serum sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 levels and markers of kidney damage in elderly populations.
- To assess the utility of sTNFRs as biomarkers for kidney dysfunction in community-dwelling older adults.

- Cross-sectional analysis of two independent community-based cohorts: Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (n=815) and Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men (n=778).
- Assessed serum sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 levels, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), and urinary kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1).
- Statistical adjustments for age, sex, inflammatory markers, and cardiovascular risk factors were performed.
Main Results:
- Serum sTNFR1 showed significant correlations with eGFR, UACR, and KIM-1 in both cohorts, independent of confounders.
- Associations between sTNFR1 and kidney damage markers were observed even in participants without diabetes.
- Serum sTNFR2 was also associated with all assessed kidney damage markers in one cohort.
Conclusions:
- Circulating sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 are significant biomarkers for kidney damage and dysfunction in elderly individuals.
- These findings support the use of sTNFRs for assessing kidney health in community-based elderly populations, including those without diabetes.
