    Area of Science:

    • Quantum Information Science
    • Optical Network Engineering
    • Cybersecurity

    Background:

    • Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is maturing but currently expensive due to dedicated point-to-point links.
    • Existing QKD networks rely on trusted repeaters for non-neighboring node communication, limiting scalability and cost-effectiveness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose a novel, cost-effective optical network model for Quantum Key Distribution.
    • To enable dynamically any-to-any communication within metropolitan areas using shared infrastructure.

    Main Methods:

    • Implementing a shared optical network infrastructure utilizing wavelength multiplexing for both quantum and classical signals.
    • Employing optical components for dynamic routing within a metropolitan area network.
    • Leveraging commercial telecommunication components and existing infrastructure for deployment.

    Main Results:

    • Demonstrated a dynamically any-to-any communication scheme for QKD.
    • Reduced deployment costs by sharing infrastructure and utilizing commercial components.
    • Enabled a reliable and scalable QKD network architecture.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed model offers an easy, cost-effective, and reliable deployment of QKD networks.
    • Wavelength multiplexing and shared infrastructure significantly improve QKD network economics.
    • This approach paves the way for widespread adoption of secure quantum communication.
