Summary

Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) have lower serum selenium levels compared to healthy individuals. Selenium levels also decrease with advanced CLL stages and during chemotherapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between serum selenium concentrations and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
  • To compare selenium levels in CLL patients with those in healthy controls.
  • To explore potential correlations between serum selenium levels and CLL disease staging and treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Serum selenium levels were quantified using atomic absorption spectrometry.
  • A cohort of 51 patients diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was recruited.
  • A control group comprised 40 non-hospitalized healthy individuals for comparative analysis.

Main Results:

  • CLL patients exhibited significantly lower mean serum selenium concentrations compared to the control group (P = 0.005).

  • These findings suggest a potential role for selenium monitoring and supplementation in CLL management.
