Transverse colon volvulus, a rare cause of bowel obstruction, is challenging to diagnose. Resection is the preferred treatment to prevent recurrence, unlike less effective detorsion methods.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Abdominal Surgery
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Colonic obstruction is frequently caused by sigmoid or cecal volvulus.
- Transverse colon volvulus is a rare condition, often presenting diagnostic challenges.
Observation:
- Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) aids in diagnosing transverse colon volvulus.
- MDCT reveals dilated proximal colon loops and a mesentery torsion at the splenic flexure.
Findings:
- Surgical resection with or without anastomosis is the definitive treatment for transverse colon volvulus.
- Detorsion techniques, with or without colopexy, have high recurrence rates compared to resection.
Implications:
- Transverse colon volvulus requires consideration in differential diagnoses for abdominal pain and obstruction.
- Early surgical intervention, particularly resection, is crucial to prevent complications like gangrene and perforation.

Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
In gastric emptying studies, a meal's liquid and...
