A rare case of nephrotic syndrome developed during severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome hospitalization. This complication, presenting with proteinuria and IgA nephropathy, is unprecedented in medical literature.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Reproductive Endocrinology
Background:
- Severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can lead to significant fluid shifts and organ compromise.
- Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder characterized by heavy protein loss in the urine.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a unique case of nephrotic syndrome developing during hospitalization for severe OHSS.
- To document the clinical, biochemical, and histological findings of this rare complication.
Main Methods:
- Case presentation of a patient hospitalized for severe OHSS.
- Clinical monitoring including assessment of ascites and respiratory distress.
- 24-hour urine protein analysis.
- Renal biopsy for histological examination.
Main Results:
- The patient developed nephrotic syndrome during OHSS management.
- Significant proteinuria was detected.
- Renal biopsy revealed global and segmental glomerulosclerosis, mesangial arteritis, and visceral epithelial cell proliferation consistent with IgA nephropathy.
Conclusions:
- Nephrotic syndrome is a potential, albeit rare, complication of severe OHSS.
- IgA nephropathy was identified as the underlying renal pathology in this case.
- This represents the first reported instance of nephrotic syndrome occurring in the context of severe OHSS.
