Gene Families01:57

Gene Families

8.0K
Gene families consist of groups of genes proposed to have originated from a common ancestor. Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Unlike their parent genes (which are subject to selection pressure to maintain function), these gene copies do not need to preserve their sequences and may evolve at a relatively faster rate.
Occasionally these regions can be adapted to take on new roles within the organism, becoming novel genes...

Globular and Fibrous Proteins

34.0K
Many proteins can be classified into two distinct subtypes - globular or fibrous. These two types differ in their shapes and solubilities.
Globular proteins are also known as spheroproteins and typically are approximately round in shape. They contain a mix of amino acid types and contain differing sequences in their primary structures. Globular proteins have many different functions, such as enzymes, cellular messengers, and molecular transporters. These roles often require the proteins to be...

Genome Annotation and Assembly03:36

Genome Annotation and Assembly

16.7K
The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.

Protein Glycosylation01:25

Protein Glycosylation

8.4K
Glycosylation, the most common post-translational modification for proteins, serves diverse functions. Adding sugars to proteins makes the proteins more resistant to proteolytic digestion. Glycosylated proteins can act as markers and receptors to promote cell-cell adhesion. Additionally, they have many essential quality control functions in the cell, such as correct protein folding and facilitating transport of misfolded proteins to the cytosol, which can be degraded.
Glycosylation occurs in...

Area of Science:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Computational Biology
  • Genomics

Background:

  • The Gene Ontology (GO) is a crucial resource for annotating genes and gene products, utilized by major public repositories.
  • GO comprises three subontologies: Cellular Component, Molecular Function, and Biological Process.
  • Current querying limitations hinder integrated analysis across GO subontologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel method for querying and integrating information across GO subontologies.
  • To address the challenge of finding co-occurring terms within the GO database.
  • To facilitate prediction of gene functions and processes.

Main Methods:

  • GOLink identifies co-occurring terms from all GO subontologies within the GO database.
  • Genes annotated with a specific term are exported and their annotations are categorized.
  • The software utilizes Molecular Function terms to predict Biological Process for gene sets.

Main Results:

  • GOLink successfully links terms across GO subontologies, enabling cross-domain queries.
  • The software achieved 80-90% accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in predicting Biological Processes from Molecular Functions.
  • This demonstrates a robust method for inferring gene functions.

Conclusions:

  • GOLink provides a standardized approach to querying the Gene Ontology database.
  • The tool enhances gene annotation and facilitates biological discovery by integrating diverse GO terms.
  • GOLink is freely available for non-commercial use, promoting wider research applications.
