Summary

Schwannomas, benign nerve sheath tumors, can rarely occur outside the skull. This case highlights a large sciatic nerve schwannoma presenting as chronic sciatica in an adult.

Background:

  • Schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, typically occurring in adults aged 20-50.
  • Extracranial schwannomas are rare, with symptoms often mimicking other conditions like herniated discs.
  • The sciatic nerve is a common site for peripheral nerve tumors, though large masses are infrequent.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old woman presented with a slow-growing mass in her right posterior thigh.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large mass involving the mid-portion of the right sciatic nerve.
  • The patient experienced chronic sciatica, a common symptom associated with sciatic nerve compression.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the mass was performed.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma.
