Summary

Polymorphous light eruption (PLE) can be triggered by UV-A light. Some patients show an inhibitory effect from shorter wavelengths, suggesting a protective role against PLE development.

Background:

  • Polymorphous light eruption (PLE) is a common photosensitivity disorder.
  • The specific wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) that trigger PLE are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of different UV-A wavelengths in eliciting skin lesions in patients with PLE.
  • To determine if shorter UV-A wavelengths have an inhibitory effect on PLE development.

Main Methods:

  • Photoprovocation tests were conducted on 38 patients diagnosed with PLE.
  • UV-A radiation (100 J/cm2) was applied to the skin over three consecutive days.
  • Schott glass filters (WG 320, WG 335, WG 360, GG 385/395) were used to selectively block different UV-A wavelengths.

  • Typical PLE skin lesions were provoked in 17 patients.
  • Ten patients reacted to all tested wavelengths or only to shorter wavelengths.
  • Seven patients showed an inverse reaction, developing lesions only when shorter wavelengths were filtered out, suggesting an inhibitory effect.

Conclusions:

  • UV-A radiation can induce PLE, but individual responses vary.
  • Shorter UV-A wavelengths may play an inhibitory role in the development of PLE in some individuals.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the complex mechanisms of UVR-induced PLE.
