Hyperpneumatisation of the craniocervical bones: an emerging aetiological pattern.

Hyperpneumatization, a rare condition affecting the skull base and cervical spine, may be caused by chronic middle-ear pressure. Stopping the Valsalva maneuver significantly improved a patient's symptoms.

- The patient habitually performed the Valsalva maneuver to alleviate symptoms of a patulous eustachian tube.
Findings:
- Ceasing the Valsalva maneuver resulted in significant radiological and clinical improvement.
- A history of elevated middle-ear pressure, minor trauma, or both is common in craniocervical hyperpneumatization cases.
Implications:
- Chronically elevated middle-ear pressure may lead to bone destruction and pneumatization.
- This process can extend into the cervical spine via micro-fractures or congenital assimilation.
- Understanding the role of middle-ear pressure is crucial for managing hyperpneumatization.
