Insights
Alimentary tract duplications are rare congenital anomalies. This case highlights small bowel obstruction in an adolescent due to a duplication cyst, detailing management challenges.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Congenital Anomalies
Background:
- Alimentary tract duplications are uncommon congenital anomalies.
- Typically present in infancy and early childhood.
- Rarely diagnosed in adolescence.
Observation:
- An adolescent patient presented with symptoms of small bowel obstruction.
- Imaging revealed a duplication cyst as the cause.
- Surgical intervention was required.
Findings:
- The duplication cyst caused a significant obstruction of the small bowel.
- Management involved complex surgical considerations.
- Successful resection of the cyst was achieved.
Implications:
- This case expands the known presentation age for alimentary tract duplications.
- Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in adolescents with abdominal symptoms.
- Informs surgical strategies for managing complex gastrointestinal duplications.
Abstract:
Duplications of the alimentary tract are uncommon congenital anomalies that usually present during infancy and early childhood. The case of an adolescent presenting with small bowel obstruction secondary to a duplication cyst is presented and the challenges in the management described.
