Inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6 can induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in canine kidney cells. This study observed changes in E-cadherin and cell morphology, suggesting a role for these cytokines in canine EMT.
Area of Science:
- Cell Biology
- Molecular Biology
- Veterinary Medicine
Background:
- Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is crucial for development and disease, including cancer metastasis.
- Inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6) are known to induce EMT in human cells.
- The effect of inflammatory cytokines on EMT in canine cell lines is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the role of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), TNF-α, and IL-6 in EMT in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells.
- To determine if inflammatory cytokines can induce EMT-like changes in canine cells.
Main Methods:
- MDCK cells were treated with TGF-β, TNF-α, and IL-6.
- Changes in E-cadherin localization and expression were analyzed.
- Morphological alterations in MDCK cells were observed under cytokine stimulation.
Main Results:
- Persistent stimulation with inflammatory cytokines led to decreased E-cadherin expression and altered localization in MDCK cells.
- Significant morphological changes were observed in MDCK cells following cytokine treatment.
- These findings suggest inflammatory cytokines can influence EMT processes in canine cells.
Conclusions:
- Inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and IL-6, can induce EMT-related changes in canine kidney cells.
- Observed morphological changes may indicate late-stage EMT processes.
- Inflammatory cytokines play a potential role in canine EMT.
