Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

4.4K
Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Flail Chest-I

1.2K
Overview of Flail Chest
Flail chest is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the fracture of three or more adjacent ribs in multiple places. It is most commonly caused by direct impacts and trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or injuries from a steering wheel impact. It can also occur due to falls in elderly individuals with osteoporosis, or assaults involving sharp objects.
Pathophysiology
The pathophysiology of flail chest is complex, involving fractures of...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis

1.5K
Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Flail Chest-II

1.0K
Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs.

Healing II: Complications01:24

Healing II: Complications

37
Complications during healing arise when tissue repair is altered by local or systemic factors. These changes involve abnormal collagen deposition, altered biomechanics, and reduced vascular supply, impairing restoration of normal structure and function.Loss of FunctionScar tissue differs significantly from the original tissue it replaces. In the skin, fibrosis lacks adnexal structures such as hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. Their absence reduces tactile sensitivity, impairs...

Fractures: Bone Repair

5.8K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Summary

Irish dancers experience frequent overuse injuries, primarily in the hip and lower extremities. Most dancers recover with physical therapy and return to full activity.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Dance Science
  • Orthopaedics

Background:

  • Irish dance is increasingly popular and competitive.
  • Limited research exists on injuries specific to Irish dance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the types of dance injuries sustained by Irish dancers.
  • To identify common injury sites and diagnoses in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of injuries in sports medicine/orthopaedic clinics over 11 years.
  • Inclusion of survey data from affected dancers.
  • Analysis of 255 patients with 437 diagnoses related to Irish dance.

Main Results:

  • Overuse injuries (almost 80%) were more common than acute traumatic injuries (20.4%).
  • Injuries predominantly affected the hip and lower extremity (95.9%), with the foot, ankle, knee, and hip being most common.
  • Common diagnoses included tendon injury, apophysitis, patellofemoral pain, and stress injuries.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of Irish dance injuries are overuse-related, affecting the lower extremities.
  • Physical therapy and home exercises are the primary treatments, with most dancers returning to activity.
