    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of memory T cells in costimulatory blockade-induced lung allograft acceptance.

    • To determine the importance of CD8+ central memory T cells in the context of lung transplantation.

    • IFN-γ induced nitric oxide (NO) production, which subsequently downregulated alloimmune responses.

    Conclusions:

    • CD8+ central memory T cells play a critical, previously unrecognized role in promoting lung allograft acceptance.
    • The findings challenge the conventional view of memory T cells solely as mediators of rejection.
    • Tailored strategies for inducing tolerance in lung transplantation should consider the beneficial functions of these specific T cell subsets.
