Summary

A brief HIV stigma-reduction curriculum improved knowledge and reduced discrimination among Indian nursing students. The intervention was highly acceptable and feasible, showing promise for future healthcare training.

Background:

HIV stigma is prevalent among healthcare providers, negatively impacting patient care.
Nurses, in particular, can harbor stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV.
Addressing stigma in healthcare settings is crucial for improving health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the acceptability and feasibility of a brief stigma-reduction curriculum for Indian nursing students.
To examine the curriculum's preliminary impact on nursing students' HIV knowledge, attitudes, and intent to discriminate.

Main Methods:

A convenience sample of Indian nursing students participated in a brief stigma-reduction curriculum.
Pre- and post-curriculum assessments measured knowledge, attitudes (including blame and misconceptions), and intent to discriminate.
Participant feedback was collected to evaluate curriculum acceptability and feasibility.

Main Results:

Baseline data revealed significant misconceptions about HIV transmission (57%) and high rates of blame (38%) and intent to discriminate (87-95%).
Post-curriculum, HIV knowledge significantly increased, while blame, endorsement of coercive policies, and intent to discriminate significantly decreased.
Over 95% of participants found the curriculum practice-changing, indicating high acceptability and feasibility.

Conclusions:

A brief stigma-reduction curriculum is effective in decreasing HIV stigma among nursing students.
The intervention demonstrates high acceptability and feasibility, suggesting its potential for broader implementation in nursing education.
Further evaluation through a randomized controlled trial is recommended to confirm these findings.
