Summary

Glomuvenous malformations (GVMs) often extend beyond the skin and subcutaneous tissues. This study found that deep subfascial involvement, including intramuscular and intra-articular sites, is common in GVM patients.

Background:

  • Glomuvenous malformation (GVM) is an inherited autosomal dominant vascular anomaly.
  • GVM lesions typically present as tender, bluish, firm cutaneous nodules or plaques.
  • Conventional understanding limits GVM involvement to superficial cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and characterize the depth of tissue involvement in glomuvenous malformations.
  • To determine if GVM lesions extend beyond the commonly believed superficial planes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in 30 patients diagnosed with GVM.
  • Evaluation of lesion signal characteristics, tissue distribution, and contrast enhancement patterns by two radiologists.

Main Results:

  • All 30 patients exhibited skin and subcutaneous GVM lesions.
  • Fifty percent of patients demonstrated deeper involvement, including subfascial, intramuscular, intra-osseous, and intra-articular sites.
  • Lesions were most frequently located in the lower extremity, followed by upper extremity and cervico-facial regions.

Conclusions:

  • Deep subfascial extension of glomuvenous malformations is more common than previously believed.
  • MRI is crucial for accurately assessing the full extent of GVM involvement.
  • Findings challenge the conventional view of GVMs being confined to superficial tissues.
