Summary

Practice nurses (PNs) in the UK provide many cervical screening services, unlike in Australia where GPs perform most smears. This review highlights significant differences in PN roles in cervical screening delivery between the two countries.

Practice nurses (PNs) have a growing role in healthcare delivery.
Cervical screening programs aim to detect precancerous changes and prevent cervical cancer.
The involvement of PNs in cervical screening varies significantly between countries.

Purpose of the Study:

To review and compare the literature on cervical screening delivery by PNs in the UK and Australia.
To identify factors influencing the extent of PN involvement in cervical screening.

Literature review of studies on PNs and cervical screening.
Comparative analysis of PN roles in the UK and Australia.

UK PNs deliver a high proportion of cervical screening services.
Australian GPs perform approximately 80% of cervical smears, with PNs involved in only 0.6% of their procedures.
