Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the utility of T2 mapping for evaluating cartilage repair post-MACI.
  • To monitor biochemical changes in transplanted cartilage over time using T2 mapping.

Main Methods:

  • Four patients with 10 cartilage plugs underwent T2 mapping at 1, 3, and 6 months post-MACI.
  • A 3.0 Tesla MRI system was used for T2 mapping.
  • Quantitative mean T2 values were compared between transplanted and control cartilage, with longitudinal analysis.

Main Results:

  • Mean T2 values in transplanted cartilage decreased significantly from 1 to 6 months post-MACI (82.40±15.23 ms to 53.80±4.86 ms).
  • Significant differences in T2 values were observed between transplanted and control cartilage at 1 and 3 months (P<0.01), but not at 6 months (P=0.196).
  • Longitudinal analysis revealed significant changes in T2 values over time (P=0.03).

Conclusions:

  • T2 mapping is a valuable noninvasive tool for monitoring the biochemical development of cartilage after MACI.
  • This technique aids in evaluating the success of cartilage repair following MACI procedures.
