Summary

Dialysate cytokines like IL-6 and MCP-1 were higher in patients who developed encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS). However, these markers did not improve EPS prediction beyond established clinical factors in long-term peritoneal dialysis patients.

Background:

  • Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a severe complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD).
  • Predicting EPS onset is challenging, with known risk factors including PD duration, high glucose exposure, and reduced renal function.
  • This study explored dialysate cytokines as potential predictors of EPS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if specific dialysate cytokines can predict the onset of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS).
  • To compare the predictive value of dialysate cytokines against established clinical risk factors for EPS.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective collection of dialysate and clinical data from 151 PD patients (2003-2010).
  • Measurement of dialysate cytokine levels (MCP-1, CCL18, IL-6, CCL15, angiogenin) using ELISA.
  • Logistic regression analysis to assess cytokine predictive value for EPS development in 17 patients.

Main Results:

  • Elevated levels of dialysate IL-6, MCP-1, and CCL15 were observed in patients who later developed EPS.
