Summary

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) effectively reduced cavernous sinus hemangioma (CSH) volumes in all patients. This safe treatment also improved pre-existing cranial neuropathies without causing new complications.

Background:

  • Cavernous sinus hemangiomas (CSHs) are benign vascular tumors that can cause significant neurological deficits.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an established treatment for various brain lesions, but its efficacy for CSHs requires further evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze the outcomes of patients with CSH treated with SRS.
  • To assess the efficacy of SRS in reducing CSH volume and improving associated cranial neuropathies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 19 patients with CSH treated with SRS between 1998 and 2011.
  • Evaluation of tumor volume changes, cranial nerve function, and complications post-SRS.

Main Results:

  • All patients demonstrated a decrease in CSH volume post-SRS, with an average reduction to 26% of the initial volume at last follow-up.
  • Pre-existing cranial neuropathies in 14 nerves showed significant improvement, with 85.7% complete remission.
  • No radiation-induced neuropathies or complications were observed during the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

  • Stereotactic radiosurgery is a safe and effective treatment for cavernous sinus hemangiomas.
  • SRS leads to significant tumor volume reduction and functional recovery from cranial neuropathies.
