Psychological stress is a significant independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). This study found high or moderate stress in most patients undergoing bypass surgery, highlighting stress management for CHD patients.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Psychology
- Public Health
Background:
- Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading global cause of death, significant in Pakistan.
- The link between stress and CHD is under-examined in local contexts.
- Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) may experience high stress, increasing adverse event risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between psychological stress and coronary heart disease.
- To determine if stress is an independent risk factor for CHD in patients undergoing CABG.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 60 patients admitted for CABG at Civil Hospital Karachi was evaluated.
- A stress evaluation scale was used to assess stress levels.
- Data collected between January 1 and March 31, 2012.
Main Results:
- Stress was identified as a significant independent risk factor for CHD.
- 60% of patients exhibited high stress (p=0.025), and 36.7% had moderate stress (p=0.0025).
- Stress showed relationships with patient age, sex, BMI, blood group, and myocardial infarction incidence.
Conclusions:
- Psychological stress is independently and causally associated with coronary heart disease.
- The impact of stress on CHD risk is comparable to conventional risk factors.
- Further consideration of stress in CHD management is warranted.
