Background:

  • Childhood overweight is a significant public health issue with associated physical and psychosocial problems.
  • Personality traits, such as impulsivity, are potential contributors to the development of childhood overweight.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between general impulsivity traits (reward sensitivity, disinhibition) and children's weight.
  • To examine the link between impulsivity traits and unhealthy snack consumption in children.
  • To assess if unhealthy snack consumption mediates the relationship between impulsivity and children's weight.

Main Methods:

  • 1,377 parent-child dyads from the INPACT cohort participated.
  • Children's impulsivity (reward sensitivity, disinhibition) and unhealthy snack consumption were assessed.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) z-scores were calculated from measured height and weight; cross-sectional analyses were conducted.

Main Results:

  • Disinhibition showed a positive association with unhealthy snack consumption.
  • No significant association was found between disinhibition and BMI z-scores.
  • Reward sensitivity was not associated with unhealthy snack consumption or BMI z-scores.

Conclusions:

  • Unhealthy snack consumption does not mediate the relationship between general impulsivity traits and children's weight.
  • Disinhibition negatively influences children's unhealthy snack consumption.
  • Future research should explore food-specific impulsivity in relation to children's eating habits and weight.
