Women with vaginitis, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), vaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis, frequently develop urinary tract infections (UTI). Testing for both conditions is recommended due to their strong association.
Area of Science:
- Gynecology
- Urology
- Microbiology
Background:
- Vaginitis and urinary tract infections (UTI) are common conditions in women.
- While caused by different microorganisms, a potential link between vaginitis and UTI exists.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between common infectious vaginitis types and concurrent UTI in non-pregnant women.
- To determine the prevalence of UTI in women diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis, vaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study was conducted over six months.
- Three hundred and six mid-stream urine samples and high vaginal swabs (HVS) were collected from non-pregnant women.
- Standard microbiological techniques were employed for sample analysis.
Main Results:
- A significant association was found between vaginitis and UTI.
- 75% of women with bacterial vaginosis (BV) also had UTI.
- Concurrent UTI was observed in 46% of women with vaginal candidiasis and 13% with trichomoniasis.
Conclusions:
- A strong association exists between infectious vaginitis and UTI.
- Healthcare providers should consider testing for UTI in women presenting with vaginitis, and vice versa.
- This approach can improve patient outcomes by ensuring comprehensive diagnosis and treatment.
