Background:

  • Unexplained infertility (UI) affects numerous couples, with underlying mechanisms often unclear.
  • Spermatozoa possess surface antigens crucial for reproductive function, but their role in UI is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine and compare the immunolocalization of functionally important antigens on human spermatozoa in the unexplained infertility group.
  • To identify novel antigens that may play a role in the pathophysiology of UI.

Main Methods:

  • Sperm samples from 20 normozoospermic patients with unexplained infertility were analyzed.
  • Indirect immunofluorescence technique was used to stain spermatozoa for specific antigens (CD46, CD55, CD52, CD69, CD98, fMLP, HI307, 80280).

Main Results:

  • Confirmed localization of known antigens (CD46, CD55, CD52) on spermatozoa.
  • Significant immunolocalization of novel antigens (CD52, CD69, CD98, fMLP, HI307, 80280) was observed in the unexplained infertility group.
  • These novel antigens may be involved in the pathophysiology of unexplained infertility.

Conclusions:

  • Characterizing sperm cell antigens is vital for diagnosing and treating unexplained infertility.
  • Further research is needed to correlate antigen expression with clinical outcomes in different infertility groups.
