Background:

State vulnerability is a critical global challenge.
National intelligence estimates are increasingly available.
The Failed State Index measures state vulnerability using 12 indicators.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between national intelligence and state vulnerability.
To assess the psychometric properties of the Failed State Index.

Main Methods:

Cross-national analysis of 177 countries.
Psychometric analysis of the Failed State Index.
Correlation analysis between national intelligence estimates and the Failed State Index.

Main Results:

A reliable negative association was found between national intelligence and state vulnerability.
The Failed State Index demonstrated factorial unidimensionality.
Higher national intelligence correlated with lower state vulnerability.

Conclusions:

National intelligence and state vulnerability are inversely related.
Underlying historical and societal factors may influence both intelligence and state stability.
Further research is needed to explore these pervasive background variables.
