Experience in treating combat burns in Afghanistan by using silver-nylon dressing

Background:

• Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) cause severe battlefield injuries, including extreme heat burns, blast overpressure, and shrapnel wounds.
• Soldiers injured by IEDs often sustain complex wounds with extensive burns, fractures, and internal organ damage, frequently within vehicles.
• Silver-nylon burn dressings possess documented bactericidal properties, making them suitable for complex wound management.

Observation:

• Two U.S. soldiers with extensive second- and third-degree burns from IED blasts were treated in a Role 2 facility.
• Silverlon Burn Dressings and Silverlon® Burn Gloves were utilized in the treatment of these severe burn injuries.
• The application of silver-nylon dressings and gloves was observed to be straightforward in a deployed setting.

Findings:

• Successful treatment outcomes were achieved for soldiers with extensive burn injuries using Silverlon Burn Dressings and Gloves.
• The silver-nylon material demonstrated efficacy in managing severe thermal injuries sustained in combat.
• The study highlights the practical application of advanced burn care products in forward surgical facilities.

Implications:
