Aldosterone and glomerular filtration--observations in the general population

Higher aldosterone levels are linked to reduced kidney function in the general population. This study found plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) inversely associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
- To explore the relationship between PAC and ARR and the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

- 1921 adult participants from the Study of Health in Pomerania were analyzed.
- eGFR was calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula.
- Participants on drugs affecting PAC or ARR were excluded.
Main Results:
- Inverse associations were found between PAC and eGFR (p < 0.001) and ARR and eGFR (p < 0.001) after adjustments.
- Increased PAC was associated with higher odds of CKD (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.06-1.71).
- No statistically significant association was observed between ARR and CKD.
Conclusions:
- Plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) are inversely associated with glomerular filtration rate in the general population.
- Elevated PAC may be a risk factor for chronic kidney disease.
