Summary

This study reviewed 91 rib tumor cases, finding that while benign tumors are more common, all lesions require surgical resection with clear margins due to potential malignancy. Early detection and prompt intervention are crucial for successful outcomes in rib tumor management.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Rib tumors present a diagnostic challenge, with difficulties in distinguishing benign from malignant types based on imaging alone.
  • Surgical management outcomes for rib lesions require thorough evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of rib tumors.
  • To assess the challenges in differentiating benign from malignant rib lesions.
  • To evaluate the early and long-term results of surgical management for rib tumors.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 91 patients with rib lesions treated between 1998 and 2012.
  • Assessment of patient demographics, symptoms, radiological findings, surgical procedures, and pathological diagnoses.
  • Histological confirmation of all surgically treated rib tumors.

Main Results:

  • Out of 91 surgically treated patients, 64 (70.33%) had benign lesions and 27 (29.67%) had malignant tumors.
  • Pain was the primary symptom for malignant tumors, while swelling was more common in benign tumors.
  • Malignant cases included 14 primary rib tumors and 13 metastatic lesions; common benign diagnoses included osteochondromas and fibrous dysplasia.

Conclusions:

  • All rib lesions should be presumed potentially malignant until histologically proven otherwise, despite advancements in imaging.
  • Prompt surgical intervention with wide resection and tumor-free margins is essential for optimal cure rates in both benign and malignant rib tumors.
