Background:

Validated measures for assessing women's reproductive autonomy are lacking.
Reproductive autonomy is crucial for women's control over contraceptive use, pregnancy, and childbearing.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a multidimensional instrument to measure reproductive autonomy.
To provide researchers with a reliable tool to assess women's reproductive decision-making power.

Main Methods:

A pool of 26 items was generated and administered to 1,892 women at family planning and abortion facilities in the US.
Factor analysis was used to select 14 items, forming three subscales: freedom from coercion, communication, and decision-making.
Construct validity was tested using a mixed-effects model.

Main Results:

The Reproductive Autonomy Scale consists of three subscales: freedom from coercion, communication, and decision-making.
The freedom from coercion and communication subscales were inversely associated with unprotected sex in the past three months.
The scale demonstrated reliability and validity for assessing reproductive autonomy.

The Reproductive Autonomy Scale is a reliable instrument for measuring women's ability to achieve reproductive intentions.
This scale can be used to evaluate interventions aimed at increasing women's reproductive autonomy.
