DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Imaging Studies V: Intravenous Urography and Retrograde Pyelography

3.5K
IntroductionIntravenous Urography (IVU) and Retrograde Pyelography (RP) are important diagnostic imaging techniques used to evaluate the urinary system. These methods help identify structural abnormalities, obstructions, and functional issues in the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. Both procedures use iodine-based contrast media to enhance the visibility of urinary tract structures on X-ray images, though they differ in their methods and indications.1. Determination of Renal Drug Clearance: Graphical and Midpoint Methods

497
Renal clearance, a crucial parameter in pharmacokinetics, can be determined using two different methods: the graphical method and the midpoint method. These methods provide insights into the rate of drug excretion by the kidneys and aid in assessing renal function.
The graphical method involves plotting the rate of drug excretion in urine against the plasma drug concentration. By analyzing the graph, the clearance can be calculated and obtained. Drugs rapidly excreted by the kidneys exhibit a...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System V: CT

671
Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that utilizes CT technology, with or without intravenous (IV) contrast, to produce accurate cross-sectional virtual slices of specific areas of the heart, coronary circulation, and major blood vessels such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The computer processes these slices to generate three-dimensional images. Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a rapid form of CT scanning that captures multiple slices...

IntroductionUltrasonography, or renal ultrasound, is a noninvasive medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and surrounding tissues.Indications for Urinary System UltrasonographyUrinary system ultrasonography is indicated in various clinical scenarios, such as:Kidney Stones (Urolithiasis): To detect and monitor the size and presence of kidney or urinary tract stones.Hydronephrosis: To assess the dilation of the renal pelvis and...

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Nephrology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Dynamic CT angiography (CTA) is crucial for assessing renal anatomy and function.
  • Evaluating kidney donors and patients with asymmetric kidney function requires accurate anatomical and functional data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of a dynamic CT angiography protocol for simultaneous evaluation of renal anatomy and function.
  • To determine if dynamic CTA can accurately measure glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and split renal function.

Main Methods:

  • Seven healthy kidney donors underwent dynamic CT angiography using a 128-slice scanner.
  • Kidney scans were acquired rapidly to obtain both CTA and renal function data.
  • Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated using a modified Patlak method and compared with renal scintigraphy.

Main Results:

  • Excellent depiction of the abdominal aorta and renal vessels was achieved.
  • Dynamic CTA-derived GFR correlated well with renal scintigraphy (r = 0.84, P = 0.0002).
  • The average absolute deviation in GFR calculation was 1.6 mL/min.

Conclusions:

  • A single dynamic CT angiography examination is feasible for comprehensive renal anatomy and function assessment.
  • This protocol can aid in managing asymmetric kidney function and simplify living kidney donor evaluation.
