Background:

  • Serum uric acid (UA) is recognized as a cardiovascular disease risk predictor.
  • The association between hyperuricemia and systemic vascular disorders, particularly erectile dysfunction (ED), remains under-explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum UA as a potential predictive factor for ED.
  • To assess the relationship between serum UA levels and ED risk, adjusting for common risk factors.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 251 patients with newly diagnosed ED and 252 age-matched controls without ED.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for ED associated with serum UA.
  • Adjustments were made for confounding factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, triglycerides, and smoking.

Main Results:

  • Mean serum UA levels were significantly higher in the ED group (6.12 ± 1.55 mg/dL) compared to the control group (4.97 ± 1.09 mg/dL).
  • After adjusting for risk factors, higher serum UA concentration showed a significant trend of increasing ED risk (OR 5.95).
  • Each 1 mg/dL increase in serum UA was associated with a twofold increase in ED risk (OR 2.07).

Conclusions:

  • Serum uric acid is a significant risk predictor for erectile dysfunction.
  • Hyperuricemia is identified as an independent risk factor for ED, in addition to established risk factors.
