Intracranial arterial variations are common, with fenestrations and fetal PCA origins frequently observed. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) precisely shows these variations, but no significant aneurysm association was found in this study.

Background:

  • Intracranial arterial variations are common and clinically significant.
  • These variations can predispose individuals to aneurysms or cerebrovascular ischemic disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the frequency of intracranial vascular variations.
  • To assess associated vascular lesions using computed tomography angiography (CTA).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective review of 455 computed tomography angiography (CTA) examinations.
  • 16-detector computed tomography was used.
  • Evaluated for fenestrations, duplications, hypoplasia, aplasia, and aneurysms.

Main Results:

  • Arterial fenestrations occurred in 2.4% of patients, most commonly in the vertebrobasilar system.
  • Prevalence of azygos anterior cerebral artery was 1.5%, bihemispheric ACA was 0.9%, hypoplastic A1 segment was 17.6%.
  • Fetal origin of the posterior cerebral artery was found in 37% of cases; no significant aneurysm association was noted.

Conclusions:

  • Computed tomography angiography (CTA) effectively visualizes diverse intracranial arterial variations.
  • The overall frequency of variations aligns with previous radiological reports.
  • No significant association found between cerebral arterial anomalies and aneurysm frequency in this study.
