This study found that combining verbal information with visual stimuli enhances learning more than non-verbal auditory-visual pairings. Multisensory learning, particularly with words, improves associative learning in adults.

  • Experiment 1: 20 adults completed paired associate learning tasks (novel auditory-visual, verbal-visual, visual-visual) using Signal Detection Theory.
  • Experiment 2: 12 adults used a forced-choice discrimination paradigm to assess unisensory stimulus discriminability.

Main Results:

  • Multisensory enhancement observed: auditory-visual tasks showed higher discriminability (d-prime) than visual-visual.
  • Verbal-visual tasks yielded faster motor reaction times than non-verbal tasks.
  • Slower unisensory pseudoword discrimination contrasted with superior learning, indicating verbal information's unique contribution.

Conclusions:

  • Verbal information provides an added enhancing effect on multisensory associative learning in adults.
  • Multisensory learning, especially involving verbal-visual pairings, is more effective than intra-modal visual learning.
