Background:

  • Male sexual dysfunctions (MSDs) are often linked to alexithymia, a personality construct involving emotional regulation difficulties.
  • Delayed Ejaculation (DE) is the least understood MSD, with unclear psychological and interpersonal causes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of alexithymia in men diagnosed with DE.
  • To determine if alexithymia levels correlate with the severity of DE.

Main Methods:

  • 54 outpatients with DE were assessed using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20).
  • Participants also completed self-measures for Intravaginal Ejaculation Latency Time and provided anamnestic data.

Main Results:

  • Only 9.3% of DE patients met the criteria for alexithymia; 81.4% were non-alexithymic.
  • No significant correlation was found between alexithymia and the presence or severity of DE.
  • This contrasts with other MSDs where alexithymia is found in approximately 30% of patients.

Conclusions:

  • Alexithymia is unlikely to be an etiological factor in Delayed Ejaculation.
  • DE may be associated with other psychogenic factors, such as hypercontrol.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the specific causes and effective treatments for DE.
