Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

5.2K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Epidemiology

Context:

  • Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive cancer, primarily caused by asbestos exposure.
  • Accurate diagnosis is challenging due to heterogeneous histology, impacting early detection and treatment.
  • Rising incidence projected, necessitating improved diagnostic and research infrastructure.

Purpose:

  • To establish a multidisciplinary network for expert pathological second opinions in mesothelioma diagnosis.
  • To improve the accuracy of mesothelioma diagnosis, epidemiological data, and medico-legal assessments.
  • To create a high-quality data collection for advancing mesothelioma research.

Summary:

  • A French national network of pathologists provided expert second opinions for mesothelioma diagnosis from 1998-2013.
  • Standardized certification procedures enhanced diagnostic accuracy and consistency.
  • The network facilitated improved patient management and medico-legal case handling.

Impact:

  • Significantly improved patient management through accurate diagnosis.
  • Enhanced the quality and reliability of epidemiological data collection.
  • Facilitated a deeper understanding of mesothelioma for future research and therapeutic development.
