Pyuric diabetic patients: A tertiary centre experience from Karachi

Diabetic patients with pyuria frequently have urinary tract infections (UTI) or sterile pyuria. Females and those with urinary symptoms or anatomical abnormalities are more susceptible to UTI.

- UTI was more prevalent in females and associated with lower urinary tract symptoms, flank pain, stone disease, obstructed pelvicalyceal system, proteinuria, high serum creatinine, and positive nitrites.

- A significant proportion of pyuric diabetic patients present with culture-positive UTI (60.82%) or sterile pyuria (39.17%).
- Factors such as female gender, symptomatic presentation, and urinary tract abnormalities are linked to increased UTI risk in this cohort.
