Microbial Leaching01:27

Microbial Leaching

227
Microbial leaching, also known as bioleaching, is an environmentally favorable method for extracting metals from low-grade ores using specific microorganisms. This biotechnological approach is particularly valuable for mining operations targeting copper, gold, and uranium, where traditional extraction methods may be economically or environmentally impractical.Copper Leaching and Microbial CatalysisIn copper bioleaching, crushed ore is arranged into heaps and irrigated with a dilute sulfuric...

Microbial Bioremediation of Hydrocarbons01:26

Microbial Bioremediation of Hydrocarbons

150
Bioremediation is an environmentally sustainable process that employs living organisms—primarily microorganisms—to degrade or neutralize pollutants from contaminated environments. In oil spills and hydrocarbon pollution, bioremediation involves the use of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria to transform toxic compounds into less harmful substances. This approach leverages natural microbial metabolic processes and is considered both cost-effective and ecologically favorable compared to...

Bioreactor Controls-II

In aerobic fermentations, oxygen is vital for microbial growth and metabolite production. Since air comprises only about 20% oxygen and the gas is poorly soluble in water—just 9 ppm at 20°C—supplying sufficient oxygen becomes a critical challenge, especially in high-demand processes like yeast growth or citric acid production. Even a fully saturated broth may offer only a few seconds of oxygen availability. To address this, sterile or scrubbed air is introduced into the...

Maintaining optimal conditions within fermenters is essential for maximizing microbial productivity and ensuring process efficiency. This lesson focuses on key parameters—temperature, foam, pH, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and pressure—and their precise measurement and control strategies in fermentation systems.Temperature ControlTemperature regulation is critical due to the exothermic nature of many fermentation processes. In small laboratory fermenters, temperature is commonly...

Bioremediation00:46

Bioremediation

17.4K
Bioremediation is the use of prokaryotes, fungi, or plants to remove pollutants from the environment. This process has been used to remove harmful toxins in groundwater as a byproduct of agricultural run-off and also to clean up oil spills.

Bioreactor Design and Operational System01:29

Bioreactor Design and Operational System

200
Bioreactors are engineered vessels designed to cultivate microorganisms under controlled conditions for industrial bioprocessing. They maintain sterility and allow precise regulation of pH, temperature, oxygen, and nutrient levels to optimize microbial growth and metabolite production. Bioreactors range from small laboratory units of 1 liter to industrial systems holding up to 500,000 liters, though only about 75% of their volume is actively used for fermentation. The remaining headspace...

    Area of Science:

    • Environmental Engineering
    • Waste Management
    • Bioreactor Technology

    Background:

    • Sequencing batch bioreactor landfill systems often face blockage issues in aged refuse bioreactors when treating leachate from fresh refuse.
    • Frequent blockages hinder the efficiency of landfill leachate treatment processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce and evaluate the alternate recirculation process (ARP) for accelerated degradation of fresh refuse.
    • To overcome the problem of bioreactor blockage in landfill systems.

    Main Methods:

    • A novel system, the alternate recirculation process (ARP), was developed, combining a fresh refuse bioreactor with two alternating aged refuse bioreactors.
    • The system was operated in three stages with surface re-aeration, comparing performance before and after a blockage event.

    Main Results:

    • ARP significantly improved leachate production rates in Stages 2 and 3 compared to Stage 1.
    • ARP led to faster achievement of target Chemical Oxygen Demand and Ammonia Nitrogen concentrations in leachate.
    • Increased refuse settlement rates were observed, indicating accelerated biodegradation under ARP.

    Conclusions:

    • The alternate recirculation process (ARP) effectively accelerates fresh refuse biodegradation.
    • ARP successfully overcomes the challenge of aged refuse bioreactor blockage in landfill systems.
    • This process enhances overall landfill treatment efficiency and leachate management.
