Summary

Aging significantly impairs exocrine pancreatic function. Older adults show reduced bicarbonate and enzyme concentrations and output, impacting digestion and potentially nutritional status in the elderly.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Gerontology
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Exocrine pancreatic function is crucial for digestion.
  • Aging may lead to functional decline in various organs, including the pancreas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of aging on exocrine pancreatic function.
  • To compare pancreatic secretion in young and elderly individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 27 young (mean age 36) and 28 elderly (mean age 72) subjects without digestive disease.
  • Collected duodenal aspirates during secretin and caerulein infusion.
  • Measured bicarbonate and enzyme (lipase, chymotrypsin, amylase) concentrations and output.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Elderly subjects had significantly reduced concentrations of bicarbonate (17%), lipase (15%), and chymotrypsin (23%).
  • Output levels of bicarbonate and enzymes were reduced by approximately 45% in the aged group.
  • These reductions were statistically significant (P < 0.05).
  • Conclusions:

    • Aging is associated with a marked functional involution of exocrine pancreatic secretion.
    • Reduced pancreatic function in the elderly may have implications for nutritional status.
    • Further research is needed to explore the clinical consequences of age-related pancreatic decline.
